I'd say experiment. I never had anyone to teach me how to do stuff, so at first.... I was worse than the original noob. But then, when I figured out "Hey, maybe I should build stairs to the HOLE in the wall, not the roof" in the Tutorial, I learned a lot of stuff. Now, I am better than the people who had me to teach them. Maybe that means I just suck at teaching, but I think there's something to starting a single player server and just seeing what you can do. Not to say having an advisor isn't helpful; it's great because you can ask questions, get some troubleshooting done, and hear about what things you should have and do.

Oh, and turn off strafe steering and just hold Z to aim/shoot when you're driving a vehicle, going on a straight part of the road.

But on topic, don't ask for admin
Don't say please.
If another player tells you to leave them alone, do so
Unless needed, don't flame(it degrates and saddens)
Let happyness flow within your builds :)(not needed)

Well for building you can let them show you what they built then if there are flaws tell them about it.Also tell them about Blockland.com so they can look around a bit
