If you want an iPhone, just get an iPhone.
Firstly, he never said he wanted a goddamn phone. He said he wanted an mp3 player.
Secondly, to have an iPhone, you have to have a service plan with AT&T.
I personally recommend the iPod Touch, simply because it can do more, but that's because
I want something that can do more. It sounds like you just want an mp3 player, in which case the Zune would be a better choice. They're both excellent devices and each has its own pros and cons. If you want a more complicated yet faster device with two cameras that can play 3D games, get the iPod Touch. If you just want something simple that can play music and movies, get the Zune.
But getting back on topic, I agree with keonesan about iOS 4.1, it's pretty cool.
