Author Topic: Yay, more ram and a new hard drive.  (Read 456 times)

So for my 14th birthday [upcoming Monday] my dad spent $101 on:
a Seagate 320GB IDE 7200RPM [I think, I wasn't payaing attention to that.]
2GB [2 x 1GB] DDR PC2100 RAM.

yay.

But now I'm starting to think I'm/he's wasting money on this, seeing as though it's an old computer with a few parts still using integrated stuff.

Kepp in mind this computer, when my dad first bought it, was only about $80-$120.

Video card: $60
nVidia 8600GS 512MB PCI, most likely maxxed out

Sound card: N/A [integrated/headset]
My headset forcibly made me switch my default audio device, so I don't technically need a sound card anymore, I suppose.

Optical drive: upgraded from CD-ROM to DVD-ROM [$20]
Doesn't write. USBs work better in my opinion.

RAM: 1GB [upgrading to 2GB, will be maxxed out]
DDR PC2100 184-pin 266MHz

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz single core [most likely maxxed out]
I saw an Intel Atom 2.6GHz somewhere on eBay, but apparently, they're not meant for gaming.

OS: Windows XP Professional 32-bit
I plan on getting 7 Professional sometime next year, or maybe during Christmas.

Compaq Evo D510 SFF. At least it's small.

EDIT: Also, I don't have a floppy drive. I have a 20GB HDD in that area where Ubuntu is stored.

You could actually probably upgrade the processor to a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 at the most, processor-wise.

Save the RAM and hard drive for when you get a new PC. Better yet, build one.

I can't, according to the motherboard's specs.

Wait, it can only hold 2GB max?

You need a better computer for gaming other than indie games.

That isn't great.

But my computer sucks so much that I'm very jealous.
