I want to learn to mod, any suggestions?

I have been interested in modification for a while, and I finally decided I want to learn how. I was thinking along the lines of a weapon/item; I already have the materials and know-how to make decals/prints, albeit crappy ones.

So, where should I start? Please give me some tips for getting started.

2. Creating a weapon/item needs you to do 2 things: Model and Script
2.1 Modelling: Download a modelling programm like Blender, learn how to use it, make a model and export it
2.2 Scripting: This takes a while to learn. Look at some weapons to learn how to script it
3. Make something usefull
