This is pretty good for a first time, even then it is just a bunch of boxes... Try extruding for the trigger guard.

You forgeted up on the top-back of the handle. Google "Colt 1911" and look at that bit of metal at the top-back right under the hammer.

Check the making add-ons with blender byDarkstar,also you color it by adding a new material,joints are milkshape I believe,download the .blend of the blockhead hands then go to file and press append or link.
