@Everyone having write permission errors:
The patch needs to write to the disk.  Normal computers allow this.  If you have installed some cracked out security software that breaks normal functionality of your computer, it is your responsibility to operate it.  Also, do not run the patch or install v18 while running Blockland.

This may explain my frequent update problems. :o

interesting, my main copy of BL froze on building the cache database, but after a good long while it the bar starts loading, and the pictures run through the whole thing :D
edit: now it's done, it seems to be working fine

Also :( at the escape menu opening when not in-game.
I just did this.

Options opens options like normal
Player List opens and contains 0 players
Minigame GUI opens and you can try to create it, but does nothing when pressing start.
Admin Menu prompts you for a password, but no matter what you type in it doesn't work, even your server pass.
Save Bricks opens a small message saying "No bricks to save!"
Load Bricks prompts the password again.
Disconnect lags like crazy, but does nothing. Console says "BackTrace: ->escapeFromGame"
Quit is the only one I didn't try, I didn't want to have to restart BL on the off-chance it works.

Oh yeah, building the cache database can freeze for quite some time.  Is that what is happening to people or are you getting an actual crash?

Took about a minute to build the database. Also, why didn't you provide us with the SQLite tool you're using for creating the cache? Could make it a lot easier for us who needs a fast database in core.

That was what was happening to me. It would freeze but the pictures would play through.. i guess it just needed to be waited out :/

i had a crash before, then i tried it again, and it worked after a while

mine goes unresponsive until I click it then it crashes
Let it keep going and don't click on it.
It's unresponsive because it's busy.

Here's why they're crashing (IMO):

BL is loading the cache in console. This causes the actual game window to be labeled as not responding by Windows. If you click on the window, Windows will ask if you want to close the window, since it isn't responding. You just have to let the cache load and do not do anything.
