Truthfully, if you're just starting game programming I would write a small beginner game in C with some help from the Allegro Library. I recommend C and not C++ because since you are just starting out, you can program in C and not have to worry about more advanced concepts like object oriented programming and things of the sort because you're not creating a massive piece of software; in the stage you'll be in, you won't need it.
