Not really, it is accepted that geniuses is the plural, genii is actually the plural of the Latin word genius, which actually refers to a guardian spirit. So Genii are guardian spirits in Roman mythology. But don't feel bad it's not like you're an English teacher or anything.

i generally just follow grammatical rules straight out, which is why i myself generally use genii.
