There are some selection buttons, and they are little boxes with these icons in a row
1.) Bunch of dots  --  Vertices
2.) slash(edge button)  --  Edges
3.) Triangles  --  Faces
4.) Cube (occludes background geometry)

small question-When did you start working with Blender?
