Yes, he did. The main character needs oxygen to live, and doesn't have a source of oxygen. Therefore, he suffocated and died.

This is how I would do it.

You are a lone miner, you have just dug out a small cave from the surface, the only source of light is the light from the sun. The dark/black area is unexplored, but has already had minerals and whatnot drawn there.


INVENTORY

Health of the tools are determined by how faded they are, once an item has completely disappeared, it has broken.
If someone wishes to join the cave they'd simply draw an avatar in the cave entrance.

It initially looked like there was no hope for this, but now it's lookin' kinda nice (I still prefer mine :3)
