Why on earth do you need that thing removed?

It's suppose to keep your lip from moving to far.

I don't know, they just said I needed it, expecting me not to hear it, or something.
You should inquire as to why you need it.
If you don't need it I'm sure it can't harm your parents at all, it's some money and a trip to the dentist they don't have to do.

And I found out I get the lip one.

AND the tongue  one.

I had one about two years ago... The only thing painful is the shot of numbing agent, and that doesn't even hurt that badly....

This is usually the case and maybe some pain after the anesthetic wears off due to heavy work done on your mouth, though I have not had this done to me
