This is why I always have three installations of San Andreas.
Single Player - Heavily modded
SA:MP - Lightly modded
MTA - No mods since MTA won't work with them ):

The steam version of SA is 3.0. And SA:MP is not supported on 3.0, only on 1.0. So you are pretty much just making the version go from 3.0 to 1.0.
This allows you to mod, play MTA, etc.
