Blender or Milkshape

3DS Max is extremely more powerful then Blender, 3DS stuffs all over Blender. If you know how to use it then its insanely better then any other program you'll use.

Definitely Blender. It takes a while to get used to the interface and the various bugs since it's still at beta. Just save often and you'll do fine.
