Are you storing the keys as variables on the bricks?
I was working on one that was keyed using colors (allowing for up to 8x8 XxY) plus depth (Z-index, relaying back through the database to find it) but it started to bug out and I was too lazy to debug it. Had it working basically but had to rearrange some things unfortunately.

It looks gay that way, and that means you'd have a greatly limited amount of files.
