I'm not just "doing" it, I started it this round. Trees are an effective way of adding brick value to a plot without spending too much on food and material.
Initially I did care about the appearance of my builds in the server, but all the crappy builds around convinced me that no one else really cares so I decided to just try and max out my gains in the game mode. If Wallet adds the ratings system he has discussed in the past then I will think twice about using trees in that way.
Besides, my tree farm has a much smaller carbon footprint.
