i don't even get the purpose of sketchy lines, it's just more garbage that you'd have to clean up when it's so easy to avoid them in the first place by simply learning how to draw a line

sketchyness is good for the early stage when you're just trying to get basic ideas and forms down

Then after that you can make lineart over it

FUUUUUUUUUUCK

i'll never get why people always have all those unnecessary lines and circles all over their drafts
all it does is take up space and clutter the whole thing

not really

Block-in is where you just draw in basic shapes and then add details and almost "sculpt" them into the shape you want. So like with this wolf guy I'd draw a circle to represent the round head, a box for the snout and then two triangles for ears. Then I make a sketch on top of that and start getting the exact shapes down. Plus, especially in this sketch, it's a good idea to sometimes draw in stuff you won't be able to see but would affect something else. Like the head and helmet, you won't be seeing the top of his head but it's useful when drawing the helmet so that I can determine how thick it is. Also with the ears so I can get the placement and length right even with all the other crap hiding 2/3 of it

another thing you might see in that sketch is a bit of simple measuring as you can see from a couple faint lines down from the top of the visor to his snout, it's to remind me how the distances and proportions relate and helps you understand the shape even more

We do it as guidelines to bend shape around it so our drawing turns out the way as closest as we imagined it. Which is a recurring problem with your art in particular. It always seems a little miss-proportioned in several areas. None of us are perfect however.

Some people are completely cut out for going down to solid lines almost immediately and make it look good. Others have to hatchet sketch to get a stronger idea of what they want.

yeah i've never done that and haven't seen the reason to
i just draw things out and proportion it the best i can

i used to do super sketchy lines everywhere but now i mostly only do it around the head
as long as it still looks good while it's sketchy i like it

that's what I said when I was drawing when I was 10

It gets difficult to just one-time eyeball it when drawing something new or from reference

i'm doing decently on proportions though and i'm still not using guides
does that put me on the same level as a 10 year old

Don't even bother asking why I did that last one I don't really know either

Not really.... it's especially easy with a reference...

i actually drew a background for once!!!
and i actually like how this turned out for once!!!
wow!!!

anyways i know the wings look weird but every attempt i made at drawing realistic wings didn't look right so i just gave up

Your head designs for your characters tell a different story to me. Unless you have some artwork I haven't seen before.

Thus why its so obviously clear in your art sketches, right.

I can never draw something that cute what

anyway I finished this

waaaaaah my hand hurts

I have to do that because I'm terrible and can't get anything nice looking without getting a general idea of what I'm going to do first. It's helpful for me but I can understand why others can forgo it.

anyway I finished this

Very nice.

yeah head designs are what i'm still kind of working on
they've gotten a whole lot better though, i want to scream whenever i see my drawings of heads from two years ago
using guidelines for faces doesn't work for me though so i'll get that out of the way before people start yelling at me to use guidelines
