He's in fourth grade; so about 9.
He's trying to be hip and cool about being nostalgic about an era he never lived in.

Even if 14, i've never "Fully" lived 90's gaming [Although i enjoyed the Sonic the hedgehog series, Earthworm jim and stuff], i don't go around and pretend i have.
Gameplay might have changed a lot, but many "old classic games" haven't aged well, i mean, i'd play Super Mario Tennis rather than Pong.

Molasses is right. Only someone (mind of someone who is) 8-10 years old would connect wanting to know someones age with child enthusiasm.
