I am a 7th grade straight-a student, along with an A in social studies/geography.
Don't be surprised, he is just a kid. I bet there are smart adults who don't know much about New Zealand either.

Anyway there is a difference between innocently not knowing and claiming you do know and getting it bitterly wrong.

Ah, but there is a similarity too. He might have vaguely remembered some sort of connection between the two, so he would have assumed that it's a part of it.
