I got lucky and notch gave me it randomly generated a good spot to carve a base. also iron in the floor.
The wood and cobblestone in the ceiling is because I wanted to patch up the roof fast, since it was turning night.

But it isn't the same in smp since you can get items from other players and stuff maybe someday I will host a hardcore mode server where it bans you for an hour when you die.

Apparently I didn't light my base good enough. When I came back from spelunking a skeleton was inside. I ended up killing it but I lost five hearts. :(
