The design of the AR-15 is almost the same design as the M4A1, but they are not the same gun. The M4A1 is based off of the design of the M16, which in turn is based off of the design of the Armalite AR-15 (which is then based off of the AR-10 design etcetc). Colt bought the rights to the Stoner design and subsequently produced the M16 series, starting with the M16A1 (noted for its use in Vietnam) and most recently the M4A1 assault carbine (noted for its use in Iraq). Major design differences include the M4 being shorter and sporting tactical rails over the barrel assembly and a sliding stock. They both use the same receiver and both fire the 5.56 NATO cartridge, but they are not exactly the same gun. |
