I made a topic a while ago about this but failed because of rage.
FreeCiv is a free, open source, alternative to Civilization. It's got multiplayer and stuff. It is a little tough to get use to but reading the wiki and the instructions for a bit will help.

But yeah, I have Civilization 2 + Test of time and might try this out.

I have laptop with no numpad, thus moving units is a bit complicated with that numpad function. :(
