The thing I like most about trench wars I've been to are the hidden weapons you can dig up, etc.
Secrets always make trench wars fun.

I think it's okay for it to be bland. The whole point of trenches is to build structures to benefit in combat. If there is already stuff like that in the battlefield, then there is no purpose in building.
