Sonic Colors felt very much like Unleashed, excluding the damn Werehog.
Perhaps I should play it more, but it didn't feel like the "Sonic game to break the Sonic cycle".

Uh. It's a 2D game mostly. Unleashed was a 3D game. How can they be the same.

They are both 3D, Sonic Colors focuses mostly (if not completely) on side-scrolling gameplay.
Sonic Unleashed had side-scrolling parts as well, and that is what reminds me of it.
Though I suppose Unleashed could be compared more to the "Sonic and the Secret Rings" game.
