You can CHOOSE how many faces you want for the cylinder. -_-
6-sided Cylinder:
8-Sided Cylinder:
10-sided Cylinder:
1000000-sided Cylinder:

The version of Sketchup I last used didn't have that option. I'm guessing this was updated.

SketchUp version FOUR has it. That version was released in the early 2000s/late 1990's. :/ We are at version NINE now, and I use v7. :/
Use the polygon tool. Type any number above 3 and then an s and press return with your cursor in the rendering window to change the number. And if I remember correctly it does the same thing with the circle tool as well.

Ah, I didn't really see those features in that Sketchup then, the circle tool seemed like the only option for a cylinder back when I used to use it.
