Well you're asking us how to build better... we can only assume that you're a beginner, right?

I thought this building was pretty good. Obviously it's incomplete, and it's for a documentary I am making:
You can't really see much, but by looking at it, I used a greyscale color scheme. Using a color scheme (doesn't have to be greyscale) can make your building look more real (opposed to RGBY).
This building is from a relatively poor country, so adding things like bars on the window, and making it somewhat ugly (on purpose!) can really get the point across for what you are making.
Hope that helps some. It's late, and I just wanted to post something. Anything.

Get plenty of decent add-ons.
Don't use spam bricks.

"one random brick pack" is pretty good for building.

Indeed. I have basically every brick type at my disposal.
Tips:
1) Avoid making bricks ontop or below one another end at the same spot. This will make a zigzag pattern and corners look nicer rather than the straight down lines stacked walls usually make in spammy builds.
2) Details make builds. In my zombie land (look at the gallery topic to see) the build would have been dull had I just used a flat roof or ramp roof. Instead I have multiple levels of ramp roofs and even upstairs windows jetting out of the roof. Look at the pics, they should help you get the idea.
3) Space matters. I would suggest always building rooms with more than a 5x height, 6x or 7x is and looks nicer. However you may have to stick to 5x in small, compact builds, such as Zombie Land.
Lastly - a builder's patience is the difference between a good build and a bad build.
