Mesh transparency issues

I have a section of my mesh that is textured to allow for a type of trail to follow the blade of my sword. This concept has been seen in lots of games (EG Zelda series) and Im trying to get it to do the same.

HOWEVER, Im having trouble getting it right.



The texture isnt the only thing visible, as it is supposed to be. The plane that I put the texture on is also visible. The mesh is set to translucent [Additive] in the exporter and I set the alpha value of the mesh's material to zero. But all to no avail. I need assistance.

The texture itself is completely transparent minus the colored area.

No its not. Its a fugly box following your sword. I dont like it. I want only the texture.

Its a plane. I want ONLY the texture showing. because though the screenshot may look good, it does not look good while swinging the sword.
