But if two police officers had weapons, why would that warrant the need for a 9mm SMG?

And generally, police firing guns in England is a final choice, since there's so much political backlash that follows, even if the gun was used to save a life.
And most officers aren't armed.

so unless a person hunts with a gun they are not allowed to own one? I fail to see the point in that. Guns can be used for more than just hunting. They can be used for things such as home protection or even just recreational sport shooting. Owning a gun is not (or should not atleast, I do know some people like this) being a man. Guns are not dangerous, the people behind them are.

Come on now, they've been grasping at the straw to make sure only the police and armed forces have anything beyond bolt-actions and .22lr's since the 70's. I want to have a semi-auto too, if I have to build one, then so be it.

Police officers and members of the Armed Forces are allowed to use guns, only when they are trained in them, and they're well trained on who to pull the trigger at.
The fact that we have guns illegal means that they are rare on the streets. Meaning one doesn't a gun in order to protect themself from another person.

They're illegal for a reason, to protect people.
We don't need them to go hunting.
We don't require them to protect ourselves, we trust the fact that there are so little of them available, and that the Police and Armed Forces are capable of protecting ourselves.

With your argument, it seems more like a child wanting a toy.

Erm, they're not rare on the streets. Makarovs, MAC-10s and Berettas are ending up on the streets all the time. All you have to do is go across the channel, find a shady guy and buy one.
