Author Topic: Would downloading an abandonware game be okay?  (Read 647 times)

I just remembered a game that I played a lot during my childhood, but I can't find the CD. It was released in 1997 and is not sold in any stores anymore, so there is no way for the company to make profit from it. Would downloading it online be okay? Not that I've done it, I'm just curious.

The term "abandonware" is broad, and encompasses many types of old software.

    * Commercial software unsupported but still owned by a viable company

Please don't ban me for this.

Does the game happen to be Rayman?

Saw my avatar didn't you? Anyways, back on topic. Is it okay?

You can download abandonware - you just sure as hell better be sure it's abandonware

As long as there is no other way to get it with money, it's fine to download.

No developer really declares their games as abandoned. like even games still under copyrights and patents that the company has ignored as a product that no longer can earn anything worth time to sell; could still come after you if you ran a popular game website that earns well on adds, that supplies their game as a free download lol.
its a judgment call based on money lol.

i think it is allowed here though.
like that transport tycoon game blocklanders play here. thats abandonware.

It's not available in stores anymore, so it is abandonware... right? Please tell me if it is or not. It's not on Ubisoft's website.

Yes; you can most likely download it legally.

Stuff that is ok:

    Emulation
Abandonware - but you better be sure
