Would downloading an abandonware game be okay?

Flubbman:
I just remembered a game that I played a lot during my childhood, but I can't find the CD. It was released in 1997 and is not sold in any stores anymore, so there is no way for the company to make profit from it. Would downloading it online be okay? Not that I've done it, I'm just curious.

Please don't ban me for this.
