For midnight you MUST pay to get some features, doubloon oceans have doubloons, they are a currency you can ether pay real money or work endless hours to get them.
Midnight has a monthly subscription you can pay for if you enjoy the game, without it you can't play all the puzzles everyday of the week and you can't make a crew or run a pillage yourself, but the doubloons are so difficult to get it's worth the loss.

Alright, I will be making a crew as soon as I get the money to buy a subscription, and enough poe to get a boat, which wont be hard.
