they dont have to reinvent the game.
new maps, updated online play, new coop stuff. why would you need more?

Persona 3 and 4 (and probably 5 and to some extent catherine) run on the same engine with minor changes from game to game and both were still the most successful RPGs of their times, leading Persona 4 to often be called the last great game of the PS2.

No one really cares that much about engines when it comes to RPGs. Engines are pretty important to FPS players.
