  2*(1/2)

because with order of operations you cannot just do it left to right.
the (1+2) is attached to the 2, you must combine them and then divide

the simple addition of parentheses around the 6/2 would make it 9 and end the arguing. Calculators automatically assume it has parentheses, calculators are very often incorrect.
