It's basically the same thing as hypercam, etc. There's no quality difference, they all use the same video compressors that are on your computer. You could record a video in Camstudio or Hypercam and then record one in the $300 Camtasia Studio and have the exact same quality. They all just have different interfaces, pretty much.

You can also choose 100% uncompressed in anything, which is exactly what fraps does.

If you have Windows 7 camstudio does not record audio.

Sound is completely based on your sound card. If you have a stuff Dell made in the past several years then your sound card probably doesn't have stereo mix/wave in, so you probably won't be able to record sound on anything. Either that or your settings are wrong.

I've recorded sound with CamStudio on a W7 laptop just fine because it had a sound card with the record playback function.

CamStudio.

It can record computer audio, mic audio, or both. It also has a controllable window and can even export to swf.

I've always had good experiences using FRAPS. It records high-quality video with minimal overhead. Be sure to purchase the full version so you get unlimited recording time and no terrible watermark. You can reduce the file-size of videos later using even the simplest of programs: Windows Movie Maker can do it!

Here is a sample video I shot at 1080p: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfL55-9VfuQ

I should note that the game itself looks terrible, but the video quality matches what you see in-game.

I have yet to see a video recorded using Camstudio or Hypercam that doesn't look awful. It may be user incompetence, but I'm inclined to believe the programs simply compress the video too much and record at low resolutions.
