Roman centurions killed themselves if their centuria was wiped out, because they felt it to be dishonorable if their men died and they were left alive. Naval captains often practice the code of "going down with the ship", because they preferred to die honorably if they led their ship and crew to be sunk and that they deserved death rather than capture.
