You can follow some tutorials on how to change your logon background. I had to use Resource Hacker on imageres.dll to get the original logon image. The one located in system32/oobe was too small.

You'll also need to compress the image to <254 kB.

you can do it without third-party software, but it's probably easier to use third-party software.
also if you're gonna do it my way, I recommend backing up the default, if there is one.
