The purpose of a flail is to apply unstoppable brute force to an opponents armor and crush the organs and bone without needing to actually perforate the armor. Knights loved them because you can dispatch a heavily-armored opponent with a single blow, imagine the damage something like that'd do to a metal robot. Crushing through the robot's armor plating would be a hundred times more effective than trying to use a chainsaw, which is made for cutting through soft material like wood and zombies and would degrade quickly and probably fail to cut through metal plating. ;3
