I think it's because GIFs don't support the alpha channel.

Unfortunately, the only alternative is APNG, but only certain browsers can see it animate.

I have the Google Chrome APNG extension, but I noticed it breaks GIF avatars, so I kept it disabled on ~~the~~this site.
