Not at the moment, but it's an achievement, that's for sure.
I believe in later stages money, probes, landers, will all have an actual use.
For now Sandbox is the only way you can play

Orbiting is pretty easy with the new maneuver system, at least around Kerbin and the Mun. Minmus is quite a bit harder though.
