I can say that the default assault rifles are very good and stable.
If you cannot (or hopefully do not want to) use all these gatling spam guns that every handicapped idiot that cannot aim uses you should stick to them until you get the AN-94. The M416 may be an alternative.
If you like burst fire weapons I would recommend the KH2002.

It's a two hit kill with headshots at range.

1 time when i was playing bad company 2, i was playing rush on defense, i run into a room with the objective in it, well there's this medic sitting on it planting and his back is to me, so i blast him with my shoty, nothing, i stab him, nothing, i stab him again, nothing, then i shoot him again and he finally dies
other then the random lag i get bc2 is a hell of a lot of fun, i just wish more people would play :(
