What would make the rocket boots more useful?

I would have said make them auto so when attacked it uses them automatically. But what if you're near lava.
What about making it so they are activated whenever the player uses a melee item? Like rocket sword attack. Or sledge.

Spock suggested that using the jet button would use your gadget regardless of what item is out at the moment. I'm liking that idea.
