In the older fallouts bombs were good for taking care of those doors your character couldn't lockpick.

also pretty damn handy for taking out assassination targets, plant a bomb in their pockets and run for the exit!

I remember in Fallout 2, I wore an advanced power armor and hand a live C4 in my inventory, so I stood next to the guy carrying the vertiberd plans and blew him up. After the blast my char survived and I carried the blue prints out, fixed the dog, and freed the death claw.
