Dwarf Fortress Megathread! - Necro'd enough to count as a vampire

my dorfs are doing quite well
in it's 2 year life, 50 odd migrants have arrived, 2 or 3 babies born, and one drowning death. 2 artifacts as of yet, lots of excess supplies, and beginning the Steel industry

Are 'elk birds' dangerous? I had about 8 of them in one of my empty rooms and the dwarves wouldn't go anywhere near them for stockpiling etc.
Either way, I set my 5-man military on them and took about 10 minutes to punch them to death. Basically the combat involved '[Dwarf] punches Elk Bird 1 in the head, bruising the skull'. Eventually a dwarf with a bronze warhammer (not really sure where he got that from) came and smashed them to bits with parts flying off in different directions. No dwarf injuries except a lost right hand.
Also, how far down do you have to go to reach iron/bronze, and where is bituminous coal? :(

Coal's in places, as is iron. Bronze is an alloy.
My best fort to date went out in a bloody smorgasbord of goblins. Not a single dorf left.
