Dwarf Fortress Megathread! - Necro'd enough to count as a vampire

Doomonkey:

I'll continue on with my adventures in case anyone is reading.

Today, determined to become a necromancer, I pulled out my world map and plotted a course to the nearest tower. It was an easy journey, with the only danger coming from feeding off of villagers in the night. (Thankfully, no one woke up). When I got there I found the stack of books on the first floor. I was surprised to read The Hills, My Love and find out that the writing was "cheery" and was "written by someone with compassion." There was also the book, Annihilation: Abridged, this got me the results I was looking for.

With my newly found necromancer powers I set about to kill a plains titan. Unlike the desert and hill titan I slew before him, the plains titan had a ranged attack and was much more durable. After I realized that my sword was having trouble de-limbing him, I decided to raise the 32 corpses in my view from the dead. I then calmly walked away and watched him get swarmed from afar.

Satisfied with my spike in power, I journeyed to the lair of a dragon. When I arrived at the lair, I spotted several pieces of steel armor, which I planned to loot afterwards. I also saw some dragon eggs that interested me. I planned on picking these up and using them as throwing weapons, or maybe seeing if they would hatch. In the main room of the lair, there was no dragon present. Rather than venturing further in, for fear of dragon fire, I raised the local corpses. Unfortunately, these corpses provoked the dragon just out of my sight and the room filled with smoke and fire. I was not able to see my own body, and for whatever reason could not move at all. (In hindsight I realize that some of my raised corpses probably blocked the way and I needed to get on the ground and crawl between them). I consistently blocked the dragon fire, but knew that it would eventually get through. It did get through and I; Zasit Roastedpost the Wail of Lights, swordmaster, necromancer, vampire; was melted alive.

Sadly, my backup was made before I became a necromancer.

Wow. I wish stuff like that would happen to me...
Usually I can never find whatever I'm supposed to kill and that's as far as I get. Or the Boogeymen will get me.

Here are the stats I use:
The number on the left is what the number should read in the game after you have finished distributing your stat points. A 01 indicates taking all of the points out of that stat as it is useless/harmful.

After you start, talk to a bunch of people for quests and look for people who want you to kill a vampire. Also, if a fortress is nearby, get some soldier pals. The villagers should tell you which direction to go to find the vampire. They may tell you to go to a nearby town. Once you are in the same town, they will say, "in a hut to the <direction>" then search the huts in the <direction> and keep asking villagers. You will be able to pinpoint the location. After you find a vampire, accuse him and try to keep villagers and soldiers between you and him. After he dies, take all of his blood that you can find. Drink this as much as possible, eventually you will become a vampire. It may not work with the first vampire you kill, so always search for more until you are a vampire.

Once you become a vampire your stats are greatly increased and you no longer need food or drink (except blood). If you feed only on your enemies then no one will hate you. The best way to do this is use a bludgeoning sort of attack on your enemies until they give into pain, or to choke them out with wrestling. You should be able to rock some bandits and become more and more powerful.

Flush535:

Okay. I'll try using those stats next time I die.

Since you seem to know your stuff about this game...
How do you find a shop? I have a lot of stuff to sell.

edit: Also how do you pick stuff up and put it in your hand? I had found a iron shield and wanted to switch it with my bronze one, but I couldn't figure out how.

Shops can sometimes be found in the yellow zone of some villages. They are also in cities (marked on the fast travel map by *). I generally don't keep things in my inventory to sel as it takes quite a few items to build up enough credit to buy something, and too many items will make you slower.

In order to equip things press 'r' to remove an item from your inventory and put it in your hand. Press 'p' to put an item in your hand back into your inventory. However, you can hold multiple shields at once so you might want to keep a few on hand. You can also hold multiple weapons, so if your weapon gets lodged into an enemy you don't have to waste a turn pulling it out. My vampire holds two iron swords. It may also be useful to put everything back into your inventory and then pull your weapons out first, then your shields. That way when you go to attack an enemy your weapons will be first in the list of attacks instead of your shields.

If you find armor to wear, you can press 'w' to try and wear it. For all of the normal playable races, you can use normal-sized armor, so if it says "large X" then don't bother. Sometimes you won't be able to wear something because you already are wearing something in that slot, you can use the 'r' button to remove the old item.

This page has a list of the key bindings and what they do: Something goes wrong with the hyperlink when I just leave it in the text so I used a url tag

You can also use the adventurer mode page for general information about the mode. Anything specific you want to know can usually be found on the wiki or on Google.
