It sounds most of the time like unintelligable screeching mixed in with a faux-fancy speech pattern and British accent and I cannot bear even 10 seconds of it.

Oh man thought I was in the Minecraft topic and I assumed by "British accent" GameChap, forget this ever happened.

When designated my dwarfs jobs at the beginning what do you guys suggest going with?
Also, when I press v to view a dwarf and it gives me information, should I use this info to better assign the dwarf?

and what do the n symbols on the map represent?

Captain Crazy:

I'm playing right now with the vaguest idea of what's going on. I've designated some areas for work and got some stockpiles of wood, food, stone and gems but I have no idea what to do with them. Is it possible to build walls or do I have to carve out a room-shaped cave?

Carve out the rooms, later on you're able to build actual walls.
