You can build actual walls any time, it's just less of a nightmare to dig out rooms rather than build them.

Found that out. I find it entertaining that one of my few miners is a 70-year old, frail woman who detests worms. This game's pretty slick and I can tell that it's worth learning already.

Dwarves are tough as a brick wall. They can do anything and anything as long as they aren't taking a dirt nap (which they don't even do that, you can shove them in a coffin on the surface), it's great.
Luckily dwarves have a maxage of 150 years old, everything seems to have unnaturally high lifetimes in this game.
Dwarves can be 150, humans 120, elves and goblins are immortal and I'm not sure about kobolds.
