Dwarves who are already insane won't go berserk. Berserk is a brand of insanity.

My dwarves go insane, or enter a strange mood, then go berserk.

That's impossible. A dwarf goes berserk as a form of insanity, when a dwarf goes insane they can't do it again because it always results in death. A strange mood causes insanity when failed.

I downloaded the game, started playing it, and everything seemed reasonably straight forward. Then I got into the actual game environment.
