If you can't tell what a tree is in DF, you don't deserve to play it anyway.

Do you even know about tilesets? Or are you purposely completely ignoring them?

Default dawrf fortress does make a dog into a "D", but tilesets can actually help you understand what that "D" means.

It might not be super graphical but at least you can understand.
(Example of animals from Ironhand tilesets).
