Oh you're right.

I still wonder what distance they actually measured the sound.

I'm still fairly sure a gunshot from 100ft away would be way more then noticeable. Especially if it was a rifle.

It completely depends on the caliber. A .22 rifle can easily kill someone from a headshot, and is fairly quiet. A .30-06 is really loving loud, and can leave a massive hole in your head.

But yeah, you must be seriously gnawing on your food to not hear a rifle shot in their own back yard.

Which also raises a question, how'd he walk outside with a rifle and no body noticed?

I heard you can also put a 2 liter bottle around the barrel filled with packaging peanuts and that'll be fairly quiet...er.
