Minecraft 1.8.1 Question

Okay, I have one question that I can't get a clear answer to.
In 1.8.1, do animals respawn?
I was wondering this because my hunger bar goes insanely low, and I am running low
on food.

Oh for forget sake, this is the worst part about Minecraft. Its players are always trying to prove that un-added features exist. Persistent mobs are being added in 1.9, they both respawn AND despawn in 1.8.1.

Well I always heard they don't despawn for some odd reason. I suppose that isn't the case then.

they don't despawn unless they get trapped in a small space. there are sheep in a swamp near my home that i go to regularly to shear, they have never despawned. my house also isn't in the swamp, i can only see 1 tree of it from the top of my house.
