You want to get into a helicopter, but naturally you don't want to shoot it and get banned.
You press tab and quickly inspect whether a weapon is out, or take the more efficient method and just glance to the top right quadrant of the HUD to see if you have your inventory open, and then get in.

mistaking whether you have a weapon out or not seems unlikely

A lot of people just want to get a vehicle, and will explode a friendly filled vehicle to get one.
Such is the case in many friedly vehicles explosions.
And you should be able to see you're weapon even in 1st person.

My general response to people destroying the vehicle I'm in is to take the blackened vehicle and put those three extra seconds to good use by mashing their defenseless bodies all over the ground.
